چکیده

Until recently, determinations of αs(MZ) from hadronic τ decays and the analysis of short-distance-sensitive lattice observables yielded results which, though precise, were not in good agreement. I review new analyses that bring these into good agreement and provide some details on the source of the main changes in the τ decay analysis.

The 2009 World Average of Α S

Measurements of αs, the coupling strength of the Strong Interaction between quarks and gluons, are summarised and an updated value of the world average of αs(MZ0) is derived. Building up on previous reviews, special emphasis is laid on the most recent determinations of αs. These are obtained from τ -decays, from global fits of electroweak precision data and from measurements of the proton struc...

ALEPH Tau Spectral Functions and QCD

Hadronic τ decays provide a clean laboratory for the precise study of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Observables based on the spectral functions of hadronic τ decays can be related to QCD quark-level calculations to determine fundamental quantities like the strong coupling constant, quark and gluon condensates. Using the ALEPH spectral functions and branching ratios, complemented by some other a...

2 2 A pr 1 99 6 Test of the Running of α s in τ Decays

The τ decay rate into hadrons of invariant mass smaller than √ s0 ≫ ΛQCD can be calculated in QCD assuming global quark–hadron duality. It is shown that this assumption holds for s0 > 0.7 GeV 2. From measurements of the hadronic mass distribution, the running coupling constant αs(s0) is extracted in the range 0.7 GeV 2 < s0 < m 2 τ . At s0 = m 2 τ , the result is αs(m 2 τ ) = 0.329 ± 0.030. The...

Different choices exist for the renormalisation group resummation in the determination of αs from hadronic τ decays: namely fixed-order (FOPT) and contour-improved perturbation theory (CIPT). The two approaches lead to systematic differences in the resulting αs. On the basis of a model for higher-order terms in the perturbative series, which incorporates well-known structure from renormalons, i...
